A British man has received a nine-year prison sentence for arson during the recent islamophobic riots in the UK, marking the longest punishment yet in connection with the violence.

Thomas Birley, a 27-year-old painter and decorator, was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court for his role in the arson incident at a hotel housing over 200 asylum seekers. Judge Jeremy Richardson described Birley's actions as among the most serious related to the riots that erupted on August 4.

The judge emphasized that the case was marked by racism, noting that Birley had participated in violent actions, including adding fuel to a fire that endangered lives. His involvement included throwing missiles at police and inciting chaos during the riots.

The hotel staff had to barricade themselves in a panic room due to the violence, fearing for their lives. Fortunately, law enforcement managed to regain control before any occupants were harmed.

The riots, which were triggered by misinformation linking a stabbing incident to a Muslim migrant, led to nationwide unrest, resulting in numerous arrests and heightened tensions across the country.
